Brown dorsally with red-purple laterally, may have dusky throat and branchiostegal region; interorbital very wide >14% of head length (interorbital width about equal to snout length); plates on head large and continuous extending from nasal spine to about 2nd dorsal spine , plates between eyes extending onto orbit rims; two rows of 3-4 knobs on head and nape; cleithral spine not evident; anal fin rays 15-20
