Body color in males yellowish to gray or black, females brownish to red, 4 darker vertical bands dorsally; dorsal spines 3-4 longest; males with elongate spotted pectoral and pelvic rays; scales above lateral line in 3-4 rows; scales below lateral line half the size of dorsal scales and widely scattered in about 4 rows; maxillary cirrus short and slender, or absent
