Body color brown to gray, may have 4 dark bars dorsally; nasal tube and anal papillae white; preopercular spines short and upper bifid or trifid; large plate like row of scales below dorsal fin intermixed with 1- 3 rows of smaller similar plates; scales present between dorsal plate-like scales and lateral line; most of head covered in small spiny scales; eyeball very large (30-40% of head length); suborbital spine present
