Body color brownish, light ventrally, pelvic and anal rays orange; occipital crests with fine spiny tops to completely smooth; 2nd dorsal fin with free ray tips in males , stellate scales above lateral line in 2-3 irregularly scattered lines , scattered scales below lateral line; upper and 2nd preopercular spine nearly the same length; body slender with somewhat flattened head; anal fin rays 13-17
