Body color in males dark with saddling, dorsal fins blackish with light spot, ventrally orange with white spots, females light gray/green reticulations dorsally and white ventrally; distinctive peppering on lips and tissue above maxillary; row of large stellate scales above lateral line starting anterior of 1st dorsal fin , scattered scales below lateral line; head often with prominent tubercles; preopercular spines nearly the same length the upper being slightly longer; rarely pigment between rays of caudal fin; body shape robust; anal fin rays 12-17.
