Body color dark with four dark blotches dorsally, small white spots along lateral line, light patches around anus and base of caudal fin, two white spots at base of pectoral fin; preopercular spines short, upper simple or bifid; no row of scales or plates dorsally; body and head widely covered with small prickly scales
