Dorsal dark brown to golden brown; may have lighter spots or be entirely blotchy; brown to white ventrally; strong orbital, scapular, nuchal, mid-dorsal, and tail thorns present; large denticles on dorsal disc edges with patches of smooth skin mid-body; tail length shorter than precaudal length; thorns strong the complete tail length with 1-2 strong thorns between dorsal fins
