Variable color from pink with black fin tips, mottled or striped, brown with fine white spots; few upper jaw teeth show when mouth is closed; dorsal fin may be slightly notched; dorsal and anal fin extending onto caudal fin; pectoral fin free ray tips on lower lobes; gill opening extending in front of 9-20 pectoral fin rays; pectoral fin rays 36-39.
