Variable color: gray, brown, pink, with spots, stripes, mottling, reticulations; anal and dorsal fins dusky, peritoneum pale; dorsal and anal fin extending well onto caudal fin; pectoral fin distinctly lobed with free ray tips on lower lobe; gill opening large, extending to 9-20 pectoral rays; pectoral fin rays 36-39.
